This archive contains two TrueType fonts for Windows which may be used
for displaying/printing modern Assyrian text.

===========================
How do I install the fonts?
===========================
The answer is different depending if you are using Windows
3.1 or Windows 95.

First you will need to have run the self-extracting archive
"ATORFONT.EXE" that this file came in. (Or extract the
files from the archive some other way.)

Windows 95: Click on the famous "Start" button, then
"Settings", then "Control Panel". Then double click on the
item named "Fonts". There click on the "File" menu, then
the item "Install New Font". Select the directory where you
had the files extracted (C:\TEMP or C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
perhaps), and choose all the 'Ator' fonts (holding down the Ctrl
key while clicking on the name of each one), and press OK.

Window 3.1: Open the Control Panel (probably in your "Main"
group), then double click on the item named "Fonts". Click
on the "Add" button, and select the directory where you had
the files extracted. Choose all the 'Ator' fonts and press
OK.

============================================
How do I know if I installed them correctly?
How can I see what they look like?
============================================

If you have Word for Windows (2.0 or later), you can open
the enclosed file "SAMPLE.DOC". (If you don't have Word,
but have Windows 95, you can open the file in WordPad.)

If the fonts are successfully installed, the document will
be in Assyrian script. The italicized parts should slant to
the LEFT, not to the right.

You should be able to print this out if you would like.

==========================
How can I use these fonts?
==========================

If you are an exceedingly patient person, you can use
Character Map (C:\WINDOWS\CHARMAP.EXE) to enter in text with
the font, remembering to enter the text in reverse order,
copy the text to the clipboard, and then paste it into your
word processor. Similarly, you could possibly use
"Insert|Symbol" in Microsoft Word to do the same thing.

The font is basically made up of two zones of characters.
The first zone is the basic alphabet and the default
diacritics. The second zone is composed of 'ligatures',
that is, combinations of diacritics and letters which do not
look right when you use the default diacritics.

There is no guarantee that you will be able to use these
fonts easily or successfully. A lot of that depends on your
abilities on the computer and the capabilities of the
software you use.

The Summer Institute of Linguistics' main database and linguistic
processing software ("Shoebox") and its new "LinguaLinks"
system are to have the "SDF-based Rendering Engine" incorporated
into them in their next release. Included with the fonts is a SDF
(Script Description File) which would allow you to use these
fonts to naturally and easily process Assyrian text on a
Windows machine, using software that supports the rendering engine.

If someone is interested in incorporating the SDF-based
Rendering Engine in their Windows software (making it able to use
not only Assyrian script but many, many others you may have not
even heard of), contact "West_Eurasia_CARLA_Support@sil.org" or
"Timm_Erickson@sil.org". Many people in West Asia would
LOVE to see a simple SDF-based Word processor developed by
someone.  Anyone interested?

Both the rendering engine and these fonts are completely
FREE of charge, and given to you AS IS. If you find them
helpful and suitable, I'll be very glad. If not, please
accept my apologies.

God bless you and be near to you.
